During the last few years I swapped out my tubes of paint for an inkwell. There are a handful of factors that contributed to this shift from canvas to pen & ink on paper, but most notably is the ease in which I can transfer an analog piece of art to the computer via a scanner. Cleanup is a snap, too!

Although I feel slightly guilty about no longer working with other traditional fine art mediums anymore, the options for using my artwork have increased exponentially as a result of making the transition. When all I’m dealing with is black ink on white paper it’s easy to scan the piece into the computer and then make corrections and add digital embellishments through the use of programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. I have not fully embraced digital coloring and painting, but I do have a number of digitally colored pieces available in print and poster format at RedBubble.

Phantom Horse Valley is an illustration I created after having spent a night camping in Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands near Pyramid Lake, north of Reno, NV. My best friend and I spent two days hiking around our campsite and taking photographs. We slept under the stars in the bed of his pickup truck and, at some point during the night, I woke to the sound of a horse snorting nearby. Well, it sounded as if it were right on top of me, but I believe it was far up on the hillside. There are numerous wild horses that roam Nevada BLM lands and this was one of them. Needless to say it sent a chill down my spine when I heard it. There is a digitally colored version of this illustration available for purchase in print or poster format at my RedBubble account.
